Butte #1, #2 Mt. SAC surging In Women's Basketball State Top 25 Rankings

Butte College received 11 of 14 first-place votes to be this week's #1 team in the CCCWBCA State Top 25 Coaches Poll.
Carrying a 13-game win streak, the Roadrunners won both the Foothill Owls Tournament (Dec. 8-10) and the San Francisco Golden Gate Classic (Dec. 14-16) titles.
Butte (16-1) received 346 points and is followed by #2 Mt. San Antonio (326 points), an 11-2 squad on a 7-game win string. The Mounties went 3-0 at the Moorpark Tommy Arellano North-South Challenge, defeating #4 San Joaquin Delta in the tourney finale, 64-48.
Orange Coast (10-1) is #3 with 310 points, followed by Delta at #4 (305) and Palomar #5 (291, received one first-place vote). The Comets (11-2) joined the rest of the state, reaching the loss column for the first time in '23-24 at the hands of Delta, 65-61, opening the Moorpark tourney on Dec. 14. The OCC Pirates had their season-opening, 8-game win streak snapped by #7 Fresno City on Dec. 8.
At #6, Moorpark also went 3-0 at it host tourney, defeating Palomar in the finale, 63-56.
The Top 10 saw seven team change places overall. The Big 8 Conference has the most teams in the top 25 with four.
- Butte, Golden Valley, 16-1: The Roadrunners are flying high as head coach Tyler Newton recently reached the 100-win milestone in his sixth year in charge of the program. Morgan Triguero scored 47 points in the three wins at the CCSF tourney. LW: #1
2. Mt. San Antonio, South Coast North, 11-2: The Mounties were lifted by the outstanding 3-game performance by Daisia Mitchell at the MC tourney. She scored 63 points with 35 rebounds and nine assists. LW: #5
3. Orange Coast, Orange Empire, 10-1: The Pirates followed the end of its 20-game win streak by routing Merced by 54 points, then rolling past #15 Long Beach, 91-55. Sabrina Lopez scored 24 points with five steals v. Merced. LW: #4
4. San Joaquin Delta, Big 8, 10-2: The Mustangs were 2-1 at the North-South Challenge. On a team with plenty of depth, Akayla Jones scored 18 points with 16 rebounds in 38 minutes of action as she may have won an audition to more playing time in conference. LW: #3
5. Palomar, Pacific Coast Athletic, 11-2: The Comets went 1-2 at the MC Tourney despite 43 points (13 baskets from 3-point range) by Nevaeh Mageo. LW: #2
6. Moorpark, Western State North, 10-3: The Raiders built their rating, including wins at their host tourney over #7 Fresno and #20 Pasadena, and are on a 5-0 run. Appropriately named Success Prysock had 35 points and 26 rebounds at the tourney, including a season-high 22 with 11 boards in a win over Fresno. LW: #6
7. Fresno CC, Central Valley, 10-4: Bruised by the end of a 7-game win streak by losses to Moorpark, then Mt. SAC, the Rams went 1-2 at the MC tourney, closing with a 93-81 win over Pasadena. Corin Camera drilled eight 3s as part of her 26 points v. PCC. LW: #7
8. Glendale, Western State South, 6-2: The Vaqueros have played the least amount of games of any state top 25 team, last playing and defeating #12 Irvine Valley, 54-35, on Dec. 8. Evelyn Birau scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds in the win. LW: #9
9. Laney, Bay Valley, 7-3: The Eagles are 5-1 in ther last six with the only loss to #1 Butte, 69-59. Jada Hunter has been a force with 70 points, 39 rebounds, 22 steals and 13 assists in her last four contests. LW: #10
10. Santa Rosa JC, Big 8, 8-4: Since a 6-game win streak that ended in November, December has been less kind to the Bear Cubs, who are 2-3 this month including a 78-56 loss to Laney on Dec. 5. Meredith Gilbertson totaled 34 points, 26 rebounds, eight steals and five blocks at the CCSF tourney. LW: #8
11. CC San Francisco, Coast North, 9-4: The Rams saw a 6-game win streak snapped by unranked LA Valley, 66-61, on Dec. 8, but went 2-1 at the Golden Gate Classic. Deadriana Prim scored 47 points and pulled down 21 boards at the tourney. LW: #12
12. Irvine Valley, Orange Empire, 7-4: The Lasers stopped a 4-game losing slide with a 55-51 win over #14 Chabot. In the Lasers defense, the losses were v. #15 Long Beach, #8 Glendale, #2 Mt. SAC and #4 Delta. Christen Ziska scored 34 points with 10 treys v. Delta and Chabot. LW: #11
13. Mt. San Jacinto, Inland Empire Athletic, 10-2: The Eagles are soaring with seven straight wins although none v. top 25 competition. Breyonna Bell collected 61 points, 20 rebounds, 10 assists and nine steals in the last four wins. LW: #T16
14. Chabot, Coast North, 11-5: The Gladiators had a 4-game win string broken by #5 Palomar, then were tripped up by #12 Irvine Valley. Nia Hunter contributed 32 points, 19 rebounds and 12 assists at the MC tourney. LW: #13
15. Long Beach City, South Coast South, 7-7: The Vikings went 2-1 at the LA Valley Buddy's All-Star Classic, including wins over #11 CCSF and #24 Ventura before suffering their 36-point defeat v. #3 OCC. In a 2-game stretch v. Mt. SAC and San Francisco, Alahnie Tunu had back-to-back, 13-point efforts off the bench. LW: #14
16. Folsom Lake, Big 8, 8-4: The Falcons are 4-0 this month as Alysa Lopez totaled 28 points, 17 rebounds, 10 assists and six blocks in the last two wins alone. LW: #15
17. Victor Valley, Inland Empire Athletic, 11-3: The Rams watched a 6-game win streak go by the wayside in a 65-62 loss to unranked Antelope Valley. Moriah Burley scored 20 points over the past two games. LW: #18
18. Sequoias, Central Valley, 9-6: The Giants were 2-1 at the Golden Gate Classic and played #1 Butte tough in a 46-44 loss in the title game. Anisa Torres totaled 23 points, 15 rebounds, 10 assists and eight steals at the tourney. LW: #19
19. Sierra, Big 8, 6-6: The Wolverines are probably getting tired of facing San Francisco (0-3) and Butte (0-2), but they beat Skyline, 74-60, to open the Golden Gate Classic. In a 2-game stretch v. Fresno and Skyline, Katie Leeth scored 39 points, grabbed 27 boards and blocked five shots. LW: #T16
20. Pasadena City, South Coast North, 9-5: The Lancers 5-game win streak turned into a 3-game rough patch thanks to defeats v. #14 Chabot, #6 Moorpark and #7 Fresno at the North-South Challenge. Abigail Saville scored 64 points with 28 rebounds in the last four games. W: #20
21. San Mateo, Coast North, 12-2: The Bulldogs' 9-game win streak was snapped by unranked Cosumnes River, 62-54, on Dec. 9. CSM is still 11-1 in its last 12, posting wins over Merced, then West LA (64-62). Jayonnah Carter gathered 37 points, 18 rebounds, 11 steals and eight assists in the past three contests. LW: #23
22. Imperial Valley, Pacific Coast Athletic, 11-2: The Desert Warriors had a 6-game win string cut by unranked Reedley, 54-50. In an 80-point win over Desert on Dec. 12, Caroline Sauceda achieved a unique triple-double without scoring (five points) being a part of it. She dished out 14 assists, made 12 steals, and grabbed 11 rebounds. LW: #24
23. Citrus, Western State South, 9-3: The Owls joined the top 25 behind a 4-game win streak. Jolleen Olia, who scored 38 points in a game earlier this year, scored 25 in a 64-61 win over Santa Ana. She was earlier selected All-PCC Grand Canyon Crossover Tournament. LW: Not Ranked
24. Ventura, Western State North, 8-4: The Pirates stopped a 4-game losing streak with LAVC tourney victories over Cypress and Rio Hondo. Sam McKenzie picked up 51 points, 19 rebounds and 12 steals at the classic. LW: #22
25. San Jose City, Coast South, 9-2: The Jaguars have won four in a row as Jade Nguyen totaled 40 points, 38 boards, 10 assists and nine steals in the streak. LW: #25
