Ojai, Calif. - Chabot College's Mina Koloski returned to Ojai with a target on her back and left as a back-to-back state champion.
Known for her ability to control points from the baseline, the sophomore dictates play with penetrating, laser-like groundstrokes. Her opponent, Emma Chodur, brought a similar style, setting up a highly anticipated baseline battle.
Chodur seized the early momentum. Behind a high first-serve percentage, she kept Koloski off balance and limited her ability to attack the return of serve. Typically steady on her forehand, Koloski struggled to find her rhythm and quickly fell behind 4–1.
With confidence building, Chodur continued to apply pressure with placement and depth. She effectively prevented Koloski from dictating points, neutralizing one of her greatest strengths, and forced her into numerous unforced errors.
Koloski, however, made a crucial adjustment. Whether settling her nerves or adapting to the conditions, she began striking her groundstrokes more aggressively and taking the ball earlier. Her footwork also improved, and her energy level rose. The shift changed the complexion of the match, as she battled back to narrow the deficit to 4–3.
From there, the level of play on both sides elevated. Unforced errors dropped, rallies lengthened, and both players traded heavy groundstrokes from the baseline. At 5–4, Chodur had two opportunities to close out the set, but Koloski's composure under pressure proved decisive. She saved both set points, leveled the score at 5–5, and carried that break of serve to take the opening set 7–5.
The adjustments made by Koloski, combined with sound strategy from her coaching staff were vital. In the second set, she took control of rallies earlier, attacking short balls and consistently dictating play. She was able to get the first shot out of every point, and closed out the match 7–5, 6–3 to secure her second consecutive state title.
Following her singles victory, Koloski returned to the court in pursuit of the doubles title. Teaming with Gracie Barco, the Chabot duo fell just short, losing a dramatic three-set final to LA Mission College's Jaelyn Rivera and Priscilla Grinner.
In a tightly contested match marked with momentum swings, Rivera and Grinner prevailed 6–7, 6–1, 7–6 (13–11). Both teams had opportunities to claim the title, but the execution of the LA Mission pair proved decisive in the end.
